Vic: Private school students admit to samurai sword attack

Eight youths -- most of them former students from Melbourne's top private schools --have admitted their role in a samurai-sword attack in which their victim almost lost anarm.

Three of the youths were Year 11 students at the exclusive Xavier College in suburbanKew, while two others were enrolled at nearby Trinity Grammar, at the time of the attackon April 30, 2000.

Police allege the group were on their way to an 18th birthday party at the MasonicLodge in Canterbury when scuffles broke out in the carpark of a nearby railway station,and 19-year-old GREG ADAMS of Burwood was assaulted.

His left arm was left hanging by the skin and tendons, and his lung was punctured,when he was struck five times with the sword.

He has since recovered the use of his arm following surgery.

The eight youths waived their right to a preliminary hearing in the Melbourne MagistratesCourt today, after pleading guilty to intentionally causing injury and affray.

Magistrate ROD CRISP has directed all eight, who are on summons, to face the CountyCourt on September 23.

The eight are 20-year-olds JARROD BALME and STEPHEN SVENSEN, and 19-year-olds MATTHEWNICOLLI, STUART ALLEN, ALEX KING, ANDREW MACK, JAMES O'SULLIVAN and AARON TOBIN.

A further four youths charged over the attack are yet to face court.
